Working Woodland Cornwall Micro-Internship
Project type
Internship
Date
2023
Location
Falmouth, UK
This was a project with Working Woodlands Cornwall to research potential uses for Turkey Oak and enhance the value of the marginal timber. Quercus Cerris, (also known as Turkey Oak) is an invasive oak species which displaces native trees, causing damage to ancient woodlands.
Turkey Oak is notoriously difficult to work with. The grain is very inconsistent and it is prone to splitting, warping, and twisting. Combined with being very dense, it makes Turkey Oak challenging to work with.
The end result was a stool which relied on dowel joints and 2 laminated brackets to hold everything together. This was to test how the wood would move in response to certain joinery methods.
