Unnik - Mono-Material Furniture
Final Year Project
Designing against fast furniture
This project aimed to re-design flat pack furniture. Typical flat pack is often made of harmful materials containing chemicals such as urea-formaldehyde, often covered with a melamine laminate. Both of these cause difficulties at the product's end of life, making separating materials and recycling next to impossible. These properties have earned the name 'Fast Furniture'.
Instead of using fixings which slowly destroy material, this design uses one material for everything. Tension and friction are utilised with a slotted joint design which strengthens under weight.
This modularity means repair is also accessible. If a component breaks, it can be removed and replaced, with the broken component being sent back for recycling.
